For years NISMO has languished as the pseudo performance arm for Nissan but all that changed at the start of this year when the Japanese motorsport and tuning firm was named the official performance partner of Nissan. Since then we’ve seen the NISMO lineup of vehicles expanded, with the JUKE NISMO and March NISMO (overseas only) joining the previous 370Z NISMO.
But there are a few more NISMO models in the works--according to Nissan we’ll see at least one new NISMO model every year through the end of 2016. That cut-off date is when the company-wide Nissan Power 88 model rollout plan is slated to end.
The next model in the pipeline is the 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO, which we can expect some epic performance figures from. The car is being developed with the Williams F1 Team and is said to be capable of setting a new production car lap record at the Nürburgring.
"The Nissan GT-R NISMO is the GT-R with which we pursue pure performance," NISMO product chief Hiroshi Tamura said in a statement. “Its development is on schedule, and I can't wait to see the model introduced into the markets."
Beyond the GT-R NISMO, it’s not clear what NISMO has in store for us. One possibility is a Leaf NISMO, a version of which is already available in Japan in limited numbers.
While expanding its road car division, NISMO is also intensifying its motorsport presence. NISMO has built a new GT-R-based race car for the 2014 Super GT season and will continue to produce a GT-R GT3 race car, as well as cars and engines for the World Endurance Championship, V8 Supercars, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and various other motorsport series.
